Short answer: ÖSD and Goethe-Zertifikat exams test the same CEFR levels, from A1 to C2, and both are built to the standards of ALTE, the Association of Language Testers in Europe. Both are well-established, respected exams. For most Sri Lankans the right choice depends first on what the organisation you are applying to asks for. That could be the German Embassy Colombo, a university, an employer or a nursing authority. After that, practical points matter: where you can study and sit the exam, the next available date, the exam format and the support you get while preparing.
If you choose ÖSD, Grman Exams gives you German classes and ÖSD exams in one place. We have branches in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna and Vavuniya, Sinhala and Tamil medium batches, and online classes. One practical point for visa applicants: language requirements can differ by visa category, so check the current requirement for your category with the German Embassy Colombo before you book any exam (details below, checked 19 October 2026).
ÖSD vs Goethe at a glance
- Who issues it: ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch) is an Austrian exam system for German as a foreign language. The Goethe-Zertifikat is issued by the Goethe-Institut, Germany's cultural institute.
- Levels: both offer adult exams from A1 to C2, mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
- A1 and A2 format: ÖSD Zertifikat A1 and A2 have two modules, a written exam (Reading, Listening, Writing) and an oral exam (Speaking), which can be taken together or separately. Goethe-Zertifikat A1 and A2 are taken as one complete exam.
- B1 and above: both systems are modular, so Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking can be passed separately.
- Where in Sri Lanka: Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka is based in Colombo 7. ÖSD exams are held at Grman Exams' examination centre in Colombo (Nugegoda). Our classes run in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna and Vavuniya and online.
- Fees and dates: both providers update these regularly, so always check the current schedule with the exam centre.
Are ÖSD and Goethe certificates the same level?
Yes, level for level. ÖSD publishes an official comparison table: ÖSD Zertifikat A1 sits at the same CEFR level as Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, ÖSD Zertifikat A2 matches Goethe-Zertifikat A2, and so on up to C2.
At B1 the two are especially close. According to ÖSD, the ÖSD Zertifikat B1 and the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 were jointly developed by ÖSD, the Goethe-Institut and the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Both test the same four skills.
What official sources say about recognition
Recognition depends on who will read your certificate. Here is what each official source said when we checked on 19 October 2026.
Visa applications at the German Embassy Colombo
The Federal Foreign Office's central FAQ on language certificates (in German) lists ALTE-standard certificates from the Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF (from B2) and ECL, regardless of where the test is taken. It adds that the exam date should normally be no more than one year old, that all parts must be passed, and that if modules were repeated, the date of the oldest passed module counts.
The German Embassy Colombo also publishes checklists for each visa category, and some of them refer specifically to the Goethe-Institut. Its National Visa FAQ (dated April 2020) refers to the Goethe-Institut Colombo. The spouse reunion checklist mentions an "A1 certificate issued by Goethe Institut". The vocational training checklist mentions a B2 Goethe certificate as a general rule (B1 for the health sector). The student visa checklist asks for "suitable proof of the required language skills" without naming a provider.
What this means for you: if your certificate is for a visa application, confirm the current requirement for your visa category with the German Embassy Colombo before you choose an exam. Visa decisions are made only by the Embassy. Our article on ÖSD and German student visas covers this in more detail.
University admission
For German-taught degrees, DAAD says most programmes ask for TestDaF or DSH. The Goethe-Zertifikat C2 and telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule are usually recognised, and "for some degree programmes" the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and C1 and the ÖSD Zertifikat B2 and C1 are also accepted. ÖSD keeps a list of German universities that accept its B2, C1 or C2 certificates. Always check your programme's admission page. Your Sri Lankan O/L, A/L or degree certificates are assessed separately (see anabin).
Nursing recognition
Nursing recognition is handled by each German state. The Bavarian State Office for Nursing (LfP), for example, lists both the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and the ÖSD B2 among accepted certificates, as long as the test covers reading, listening, writing and speaking. For other states, check that state's authority, and ask your employer or agency which certificate they prefer.
Ausbildung (vocational training)
Make it in Germany says a vocational training visa normally needs German at B1, unless the training provider has tested your German or you have done a preparatory course. Because the Colombo checklist has its own wording, confirm the details with the Embassy and your training company.
Practical differences for Sri Lankan candidates
Where you study and sit the exam
Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka runs its courses and exams from Colombo 7. Grman Exams runs German classes in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna and Vavuniya, plus online classes in Sinhala and Tamil medium, and holds ÖSD exams at its examination centre in Colombo (Nugegoda). For a learner in Jaffna, Vavuniya or Kandy, studying close to home and travelling only on exam day can save a lot of time.
Exam format and retakes
The biggest format difference is at A1 and A2. In ÖSD, the written and oral exams are separate modules. If you pass the written module but need more practice in Speaking, you can focus on retaking just that module, subject to the ÖSD rules and our exam policy. Goethe's Sri Lanka exam FAQ explains that its A2 exam needs at least 60 points overall, including at least 45 in the written exam and 15 in the oral exam, and that A1 and A2 are taken as a complete exam. From B1 upwards both systems let you retake single modules. For ÖSD pass marks, see our ÖSD A1 and A2 passing criteria guide.
Dates, fees and registration
Exam dates and fees change during the year, so we don't list them here. For ÖSD at Grman Exams, check the current schedule on the ÖSD A1, A2, B1 and B2 exam pages, or contact us. For Goethe exams, see the Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka website. Seats are limited, so register early if you have a visa or job deadline.
Practice material
Both providers publish free practice material. ÖSD offers model sets with audio files on its downloads page, and the Goethe-Institut offers free online exam training for each level. Do at least one full timed model test in your exam's format.
How Grman Exams helps you prepare for ÖSD
- Courses for every level: structured A1, A2, B1 and B2 courses that prepare you for the ÖSD exams, with physical and online options.
- Four branches and online classes: learn in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna or Vavuniya, or join online from anywhere in Sri Lanka.
- Sinhala and Tamil medium: grammar explained in your own language.
- Extra practice support: free one-to-one tutoring sessions for internal students, and AI speaking practice with the Grman Exams Premium app.
- Modular ÖSD exams: at A1 and A2 you can sit the written and oral modules together or separately, so you can focus your preparation where you need it.
How to decide: a 5-step checklist
- Name your goal: spouse visa, student visa, Ausbildung, nursing recognition, university admission or personal learning.
- Get the requirement from the source: the German Embassy Colombo for visas, your university's admission page, or your employer and the state nursing authority. Keep a screenshot or email showing the date.
- Check how recent the certificate must be: for visas, the exam date should generally be no more than one year old.
- Compare real availability: the next exam date at your level, travel time from your town, and when results are released.
- Prepare for the format you will sit: take an official model test and book a mock exam if you can.
Example 1: Tharsha, a nurse in Jaffna, wants to work in Bavaria. The Bavarian nursing authority lists ÖSD B2, so she studies B2 at our Jaffna branch in Tamil medium and sits the ÖSD exam. She also confirms the language rule for her visa category with the Embassy.
Example 2: Nadeesha in Kurunegala is applying to join her husband in Germany. Because the Colombo spouse checklist refers to a Goethe A1 certificate, she first asks the Embassy which certificate it requires. Meanwhile she starts an online A1 course, since the A1 skills are the same for either exam.
Frequently asked questions
Is ÖSD easier than Goethe?
No official source says either exam is easier. Both test the same CEFR levels to ALTE standards, and the task types and topics differ slightly. The exam you have practised for will usually feel more familiar.
Is ÖSD B1 the same as Goethe B1?
ÖSD says the ÖSD Zertifikat B1 and Goethe-Zertifikat B1 were jointly developed by ÖSD, the Goethe-Institut and the University of Fribourg. They test the same level and skills.
Will the German Embassy Colombo accept my ÖSD certificate?
The Federal Foreign Office's central guidance lists ÖSD among accepted providers regardless of test location, and some Colombo checklists refer to the Goethe-Institut for certain visa types (checked 19 October 2026). Confirm the requirement for your visa category with the Embassy before you book.
How long is a German certificate valid for a visa?
The certificate itself may have no expiry date (Goethe says its certificates are valid indefinitely), but for visas the Federal Foreign Office says the exam date should generally be no more than one year old.
